Maryland's Theft Statutes: Embezzlement, Bad Checks, Fraud, Shoplifting

Maryland has several statutes that relate to taking something from another person. Whether the various forms of theft, whether by trick, by credit card, or through the use of modern technologies, the statutes have substantially identical elements. A thief:

  1. took the property of another person
  2. without legal right to the property and
  3. with the intention of permanently depriving the owner of the property.

Too often, merchants and others misuse the criminal justice system to resolve commercial disputes. You may think that you have a legitimate position, but the police and prosecutors may not have the inclination to review your side. The risks to your reputation and your freedom are too great. Do not wait. Call a lawyer immediately.
