Police Action: Cases of Misconduct and Brutality
Television shows and movies are entertainment. The violent behavior depicted for entertainment purposes is not intended as reality. There are police officers whose temperament or judgment are not suited to the power they wield. When emotion replaces rationality, the result can be serious physical injury to those, both rightly and wrongly, in a confrontation with police officers.
Protecting Your Rights
Among the greatest aspects of American culture is the recognition that, even in the performance of their duties, law enforcement officers are restricted in the method and manner by which they may legitimately perform their duties.
Sometimes, police officers simply are acting like bullies. One example is the college kid who drank way too much at a local bar. An off-hours police officer was working as a bouncer and stationed outside the bar. The kid was told to leave the bar.
Outside, he saw the bar's owner and pleaded for permission to return to the bar. The officer, plainly trying to impress the co-eds, grabbed the kid from behind and beat the younger man so badly that the kid was taken to the hospital. To cover his tracks, the officer charged the kid with disorderly conduct.
If you are injured as a result of the actions of a law enforcement officer, you may well have the right to receive compensation for your injuries. As with any allegation of a Constitutional violation, the defense of reasonableness is available to the officer.
